Vintage Songs to Teach Your Kids (or Maybe Not) 3

I’m probably dating myself here, but on a recent long road trip with just me and my kids, I decided to break up the monotony of the drive by teaching them songs I learned when I was a kid (and thought were pretty darn cool at the time). My kids are tweens and teens, and while they did give me the rolling eyes of “good grief, Mom”, I have to say, I’m pretty sure they had fun with the songs. I know I did.

Does anyone remember this one from your childhood?

What Did You Have For Lunch Today

(here are the lyrics that I was taught – you may remember different lyrics)

What did you have for lunch today?
I had great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey meat,
Dirty little birdies feet.
French fried eyeballs,
Roasted toasted parakeet,
That’s what I had for lunch
… without a spoon

There’s even a Wikipedia article about this song at Great Big Gobs. And if you need the tune, here’s a YouTube video for Great Big Gobs.

Or how about this one?

Flea. Fly. Flo.

(here are the lyrics I remember – again, your memories may be different)

Flea.
Flea fly.
Flea fly flo.
The bee sting!
Koomalada, koomalada, koomalada bee sting!
Oh, no no the bee sting!
Eeny meeny dessameeny oowalla-walla-meeny.
Eeny meeny salameeny oowalla walla meeny.
Beep biddalee ottendootten, bee bop sa deeten dotten, bo bo sa deeten dotten
The bee sting!
Sssssssssssssss…..

There are MANY versions of this song on YouTube, but thought you might enjoy this modern take on the song at Flea Fly Flo.

Or how about this one?

Hello Operator

(here are the lyrics I remember – your memories may vary)

Miss Susie had a tugboat,
her tugboat had a bell,
And when she went to heaven,
her tugboat went to Hell–

O operator,
Give me number nine
and if you disconnect me
I’ll kick you right be–

’hind the ’frigerator,
There is a piece of glass
And if you sit upon it
You’ll cut your big fat

Ask me no more questions,
tell me no more lies.
If you get hit with a bag of sh**
Be sure to close your eyes!

Yeah – I know. I never said the sh** word (Mom would have washed my mouth out with soap!)

Funny lyrics, I never heard of any of these. Maybe because I grew up in England. I remember one about a “Fat girl guide” which wouldn’t pass muster today at all

I never heard those! I recognized the Miss Suzy one, knew the tune immediately, but we had different words. Couldn’t even begin to tell you what they were, not sure I ever knew them by heart, but I know they weren’t the ones you remember. LOL Must be the regional differences.
