The Conversation Piece this Week
This week, I read an article called “Make Old Furniture New Again With These Designer Tips” by Brian Patrick Flynn on HGTV. The article is about turning inexpensive furniture into something new and amazing, and I just had to share this with you.
From the article, I really like this idea:
I see old dressers and buffet pieces like this everywhere I go, and always try to envision what they could become.
Of course these quality wood pieces can be sanded down and refinished for a more modern look. They could also be painted in a color to compliment your decor – either with a solid monochrome look, or with several colors of paint. I also like the idea of painting the pieces one color and then embellishing them with hand painted designs or with trompe l’oeil.
Another popular way to change the look of these pieces is with fabric, or decoupage and paper.
When my first son was born and I was designing his bedroom, I used my old hardwood dresser that I had as a kid and turned it into a fun piece for his jungle room. I painted the dresser and then used animal print brushed fabric and batting to cover the fronts of the drawers – each drawer a different animal print. I added specialty knobs to the drawers, and the dresser turned out perfect! We used that dresser for his baby clothes, and as a changing table. We’ve since moved, and he’s a teenager now, but he still has that dresser in his room in his walk-in closet – that makes me smile!
Lately, I have been on a quest to find an old swivel chair similar to one my Grandma had. I hope to find one so I can reupholster it in a bright colored fabric and use it in our master bedroom.

a pretty nice article as always! Merci JD! Love this : “fun piece for his jungle room”! … maybe one of these days?! I will finally get a veranda, then I will design a new room decor with furniture & objects we have in the attic that I enjoy the most.
